Choose your resort according to your level of skiing
When booking a ski holiday, it is important to choose a resort whose ski area is adapted to your level. There is no point in going to the Face de Bellevarde in Val d’Isère if you are a beginner and you arelearning to ski. On the contrary, it could even be dangerous.
So take the time to study the ski area. To help you, we propose a selection of Haute-Savoie resorts according to the level of difficulty of the slopes:
-
The ideal resorts for beginners: Passy Plaine-Joux, le Semnoz, Manigod
-
For families, we recommend : Le Grand-Bornand, Megève, Flaine
-
For experienced skiers, we recommend : La Clusaz, Châtel, Chamonix Mont-Blanc
Take into account the labels of the resorts
Today, the choice of a resort rather than another is also made by the labels. Among the best known, there is the Family Plus label. It was created so that families can make the most of their ski holidays. Recognised by the Ministry of Tourism, it allows the selection of resorts that meet the expectations of families with children aged 18 months and over.
In Haute-Savoie, we have 9 resorts with the Family Plus label:
- Combloux
- La Clusaz
- Le Grand Bornand
- Les Contamines-Montjoie
- Les Houches
- Avoriaz
- Les Gets
- Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc
- Praz-sur-Arly
Other labels also exist, such as Nordic France, Les Stations Vertes or Top Of The French Alps and Tourisme Handicap.
Winter holidays no longer always rhyme with downhill skiing
For several years now, resorts have been diversifying their offer and no longer focus solely on downhill skiing. It must be said that the French no longer necessarily ski all day. On average, 3 activities are practiced outside of skiing. An IPSOS study dating from 2021 shows that 48% of French people go walking, 31% go sledging and 29% go snowshoeing.
New activities have therefore been developed, such as ski touring, dog sledding and even iceclimbing. The objective of the resorts remains to meet the expectations of their customers.
Closing dates for Nordic areas
The number of cross-country skiing enthusiasts is increasing. We therefore suggest that you discover the closing dates of the Haute-Savoie areas and the main ones in Savoie and Isère.

Good plans to enjoy the resorts
Skiing during the day is always synonymous with pleasure. But what about putting on your ski boots at night, for a nocturne or a full moon? You should know that this is possible in some resorts. This means that you can return home with beautiful photos and memories. Here are some examples of resorts where you can ski after a good raclette:
- La Clusaz
- Les Saisies
- Manigod
- Chamonix Mont-Blanc
And Nordic skiing is not to be outdone either, as it is possible to slide on the snow every Thursday evening at the Plateau des Glières between 6pm and 8.30pm. On Wednesdays, it is in Grand-Bornand or Contamines-Montjoie that you can enjoy it.
For those who are too cold, we propose another option: enjoy the slopes after closing time, legally and safely, to take advantage of the sunset. You can do this activity in Grand Bornand or in Flaine for the Haute-Savoie.

Dynamic pricing, to pay less for your ski pass
Another good plan to enjoy the slopes without breaking the bank is dynamic pricing. If you don’t know what this is, you should know that the concept is simple: the earlier you buy your ski passes before your holiday or your ski day, the cheaper they will be. In France, several resorts have already launched this system, such as Avoriaz and Val Cenis.
Of course, the discounts offered are not the same depending on the period. You will make more savings by taking a ski pass during the week and outside the school holidays. This is a way for the resorts to boost the number of visitors to their ski areas.
Our ideas to keep you busy this winter
We suggest a small selection of activities to try out this winter during your stay in the mountains:
-
The Semnoz Eco-Bivouac. Sleep in an igloo or in an Alti-Dome. A campfire, a Savoyard meal and a snowshoe walk are on the programme for this unique experience. A concept promoted by Alpes Bivouac.
-
Shepherds at La Belle Étoile in Châtel. Leave for a 30-minute walk on the heights of Châtel and join a chalet to enjoy a typical meal. The return journey is by torchlight or Yooner. An activity proposed by the Ski School Academy.
-
White Challenge, escape game in La Clusaz. You will have to save the French mountains using your knowledge. Ideal for learning more about mountain safety, this escape game is available for 25 euros from the ESF in La Clusaz.
-
Ice Floating in Val d’Isère. Equipped with a waterproof suit, you can relax in a frozen lake and let yourself be carried along without the risk of getting cold. An activity proposed by Évolution 2.
Events not to be missed
Every winter, certain events return. They take place all over Haute-Savoie and help to liven up the resorts. Locals and tourists alike go to them every year.
The Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc Humour Festival
It takes place in March and gives pride of place to comedians. The programme is designed to showcase recognised artists, but also emerging talents. The line-up is selected by Arthur Jugnot, artistic director of the festival.
In recent years, spectators have been able to see Dany Boon or Michaël Gregorio on stage. These are special moments that have made this event famous.
The comedians can also win three trophies: the Public Prize, the Jury Prize and the “Coup de Coeur” Prize.
Rock the Pistes
Rock the Pistes is a pop-rock music festival that takes place on the slopes of the Portes du Soleil, between France and Switzerland. More than 28,000 festival-goers come together every year.
It’s a unique opportunity to end the season on a high note, while enjoying a great programme. Among the artists who have already performed at Rock the Pistes are Skip the Use, Ofenbach and IAM.
For the 2023 edition, which will take place from 12 to 18 March, the headliners will be announced as the winter season progresses.
Glisse en Coeur
Glisse en Cœur is the charity ski race not to be missed in Haute-Savoie. Every year, an association is highlighted. In 2023, it will be À Chacun son Everest.
For 24 hours, teams race down the slope located on the Charmieux piste in Grand Bornand. The objective? To do as many laps as possible in order to raise as much money as possible for the association.
In 2022, €738,922 was raised for the MeeO association, located in Annecy-le-Vieux.
La Grande Odyssée
La Grande Odyssée is the event not to be missed when it comes to sled dogs. This race is the most demanding and brings together the best mushers for over a week.
On average, 32 km are covered every day by the crews. La Grande Odyssée also involves 600 dogs, all of which are considered to be top-level athletes.
In 2023, it will start from Megève on Saturday 07 January and will pass through La Chapelle d’Abondance, Bernex or Val Cenis and Pralognan-la-Vanoise.
