The ski resort of Le Grand Bornand has been hosting the Biathlon World Cup for several years now. A unique opportunity to start the winter season and to encourage the French biathletes.
The Nordic meeting not to be missed!
The Biathlon World Cup in Le Grand Bornand is an opportunity to see the greatest athletes on the circuit compete. Among the French athletes, we will find Quentin Fillon-Maillet or Émilien Jacquelin, while the women will be able to count on Anaïs Chevalier-Bouchet and Julia Simon. To encourage them and to see them in full effort, we advise you to position yourself at the level of the climbs and not in the stands.
The Sylvie Becaert stadium, the only French venue with an A licence
The stadium where the World Cup takes place is located next to the village centre. It is named after Sylvie Becaert, a champion from Grand Bornand in 2000. Its temporary nature, as well as its proximity to the village, makes it a unique circuit. The Grand Bornand biathlon stadium also has an exclusive licence in France from the International Federation.
The A licence is essential for a ski resort to organise an event on the scale of the World Cup. The organisers must therefore offer a penalty ring, a shooting range, areas for welcoming the public and open and compact cross-country ski trails. In a few figures, the Grand Bornand stadium is :
A World Cup that respects the environment
The organisers of the event also strive to respect the environment. In order not to disturb the local ecosystem, 80% of the infrastructure is dismantled at the end of the competition. With the same aim of preserving natural environments, the route taken by the biathletes largely covers the existing cross-country ski trails. And as the Biathlon World Cup attracts a large number of spectators, 50% of them are transported from Thônes and the lower valley.
Practical information
The biathlon stadium is the central point of the event. However, the whole resort of Le Grand Bornand is in turmoil for a week. It can therefore be difficult to get around and to park. We recommend that you walk or take the shuttle bus if you are staying in the village. If you are coming fromAnnecy or more generally from the Haute-Savoie, opt for carpooling to Thônes or Glières-Val-de-Borne. There are car parks and you can finish the journey by taking a shuttle bus.
