Nonglard is a small village in Haute-Savoie, in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is located 10 km west of Annecy. The commune is bounded to the north by the commune of Sillingy, to the east by Poisy, to the south by Lovagny and to the west by Vaulx. It reaches an altitude of 500 metres.
Geographical location
The commune covers an area of 412 hectares and is part of the Fier et Usses community of communes. The 600 inhabitants of the village are called Nonglardiens. There are currently 7 dairy farms and one beef farm.
Farming is, therefore, the dominant activity. Nonglard owes its name to the Latin Ungula, which means horn of the foot of a herbivore. Several hamlets make up the village.
Monuments and tourist sites
The church
Its bell tower, with its four-sided spire surmounted by a cross with a rooster, houses two bells. The oldest, known as the big bell, came out of the Beauquis Frères foundries in Quintal in 1870.
It bears a decorative motif of Christ on one side and a Virgin on the other with the inscriptions “Sancte Victor et Urse – Orate pronobis”. The interior of the church of Saint-Victor-et-Saint-Ours was restored in 1891 by the parish priest Pélisson. Various works were then carried out.
Chapel of the Immaculate Conception
The chapel of the Immaculate Conception is located in the middle of the hamlet of Chez Collomb. Notre Dame de Sées (formerly Séez) was built by and at the expense of Brothers François and Nicolas Poncet, sons of the late Marin Poncet and Franchette Dunoyer.
The Lantern of the Dead
This curious building, better known as a “monument”, was built at the beginning of the 17th century. It is 4 m high and 1.60 m in diameter. Openings allow for the placement of lights oriented towards the four cardinal points. Another space housed a prayer book. The Lantern of the Dead is topped by a wrought iron cross.
The lantern had two uses in the past. It was used for an important rite of the cult of the dead, which consisted of shining lights during burials. This was a way ofhonouring the dead in the Middle Ages. Secondly, at the time of its construction, Nonglard was affected by epidemics which caused many deaths. This is why this lantern, placed in the centre of the village, indicated the periods of contagion. It was a means of limiting the epidemic.
This curiosity is quite rare in the region and is listed as a historical monument.
